Frequently Asked Questions
Do tattoos hurt/how much do tattoos hurt?
Yes, generally tattoos do hurt. How much, however, depends on the person and the location of the tattoo.
How long do tattoos take to heal?
Depending on how you take care of it and how long you personally take to heal, anywhere from 3 weeks to a month.
What tattoo should I get?
If you don’t have a tattoo idea in mind when you reach out to us or walk in the shop, you should wait until you have an idea in mind unless you are interested in a pre-drawn piece from one of our artists. Tattoos are permanent, so you should be fully committed to it prior to coming to us.
How long will my tattoo take to do?
This can vary based on difficulty of placement, detail in the design and how many breaks are taken during the session.
Why do I need a deposit for appointments?
The deposit is to cover your appointment date and time in the event that you cancel or no-show on one of our artists. They don’t make money if you cancel or don’t show for the appointment, so that covers their time for the day of and the time they spent drawing your design. The deposit comes out of the price of your tattoo the day of your appointment (unless it is a multi-session tattoo, in which case it comes out of the last session) and covers one reschedule with 48-hour notice.
Can I work out after getting tattooed?
Generally, it is advised not to do anything that will strain the area of the tattoo for the first 2-3 days after getting it. As a rule of thumb, if it hurts, stop. If you have DermShield on your tattoo, you don’t want it to fill up with sweat so avoid that for the time you have the bandage on. DO NOT LET YOUR FRESH TATTOO TOUCH GYM EQUIPMENT.
Can I go swimming?
Do not go swimming for at least 2 weeks after getting tattooed, or submerge it in a bath. It will keep it open to bacteria and can prevent it from healing properly.
Can I use numbing cream?
Yes, just inform your artist of the usage of numbing cream prior to the session. Most numbing creams must be put on at least 30 minutes to one hour before the session. Read the directions of your chosen numbing cream thoroughly and make sure to do a test patch a few days before your tattoo. The main issues artists have with the usage of numbing cream is that the skin can sometimes change texture slightly, and that it can wear off before the session is over. In the event that it does wear off before the session is over, your pain tolerance may decrease rapidly, due to not being able to get used to the pain throughout the session.
Can I tan with a new tattoo?
It is advised not to tan after getting tattooed at all, as it will cause your skin to exfoliate at a higher rate and make your tattoos look faded faster over time. Sunscreen is your friend!
Will weight loss or gain affect my tattoos appearance?
Potentially, but this is another thing that varies by person. We suggest looking up photos of how tattoos change during weight loss or gain to see what the possibilities in appearance change are.
Will my tattoos fade over time/will color tattoos fade?
Eventually, your skin will age and the tattoos you have will spread and look faded over time. This is natural with any tattoo, as skin is an unpredictable canvas. Color tattoos generally should not fade any faster than a black tattoo, unless the colors are extremely light, which has the potential to fade faster over time. If the tattoo is applied correctly, these effects are lessened, but it always helps to take good care of your skin before and after getting tattooed. Moisturize, use sunscreen, and practice good aftercare to ensure the longevity off your tattoo. Also, listen to your artist about size, it does matter!
